Contest at Fort Canning07.12.08

After flooding Twitter and emails to request for voters, my bag design finally got into the top 20. Thank you my friends! The final round was to convince the judges that the design will get the money rolling in. Although it was my design, I assigned DD to present it to the audience as I have severe stage fright. He credited me on stage. Shucks!

I’m grateful that HF and NL were able to make it. Thank you. The place was held at Fort Canning Greens. Familiar, right? I finally saw the designer who did the Chinese Opera singer. Her design is way cool! It took her 4 to 5 days just to get this final look.

My final bag design is so different from hers. All made from Photoshop brushes.

The Opera singer design won her the MacBook Air. She deserved it! All other bag designs can be viewed in my album here. There was free food and drinks, including beer. Apparently, Agva and Ripplevox love beer. There was a magic show during one of the presentations where this guy attempted to impress the judges further by taking out a $10 note from his empty hands. Cool trick to impress the girls. Flowers would be better, boy.

Another guy had stage fright and he ended up talking louder, faster and incoherently. I only caught a few words that I understood but ultimately, he ended up making prejudiced sentences with his long speech prepared in his paper. I think he should have asked someone to help him present it instead of insulting everyone without meaning to.

I was really honoured that the designer for the opera singer loved my design. Thank you!

My question is: Will I get royalty fees if the bag designs are being mass produced? I do want to credit the Photoshop designers.

Too Many Things Going On07.06.08

There have been too many things going on. I’m quite confused as to where I should be starting. It’s hazy and yet I have so many things to do. Such as finding ways to earn money without resorting to working in an office. Unfortunately, Singapore isn’t really a good place to start. Or any other country for that matter.

I still need a day job. Unless I can work 4 hours a week. It will be a dream come true. I haven’t gotten over Latte’s demise yet. It is a traumatic experience if you witness your beloved pet grasping his last breath in front of you despite all the efforts to save him. It was really unfortunate that Latte died as a virgin.

I haven’t been sleeping well since. Some of you may scoff at the idea of losing sleep over some guinea pig. However, any pet owner will be upset at the lost of their pets because they have been spending time bonding together and gotten to love each other. Imagine living together with your Labrador for 15 years. It passed away due to sickness or old age. You have been walking around the neighbourhood every day and the loss has changed the routine. How does that feel?

I have been thinking about life. It’s so short that I just want to spend more time with my family rather than spending so much time at work earning more money but it’s useless when you can’t be there when your family needs you.

I have been thinking of starting my own business but it isn’t going to be easy since I have absolutely no idea where to begin. I do know there is someone who wishes to help. That’s so sweet. At this moment, I would like to think about the business type and strategies before jumping into the bandwagon.

Horrible Service With True Spa06.30.08

I am utterly fed-up with True Spa. Each time an appointment has to be made, I have failed to secure any appointments that fit DD and my schedule. DD has made an appointment with the account manager and we have yet to know if it is confirmed because there isn’t any call from them.

This is horrible. We have booked a month in advance and apparently, this isn’t enough. I don’t even know if the person is still working or just ignoring us. Why do we even buy a package when the after sales service is horrible and lacking the attitude to even keep the paying customers happy?

Spas are supposed to keep customers happy so that they will introduce their friends to join in. Spas are supposed to have adequate follow-ups so that customers won’t be even blogging or writing so many negative reviews too.

I don’t even know how much we have left to use it all up so that we will take our money elsewhere. Bangkok and Batam have better services that this company. They even have slots open for 4 hours in advance or immediate.

The Start of a Headache06.21.08

I have this electrifying headache at the back of my head for 2 days now. I thought the sleep would help. No. The spot is ticking at intervals. It’s frustrating because I can’t even relax. Either the lack of sleep is causing it or I’m just reacting to something else.

I don’t really know what is causing it. This is the kind of headache that is difficult to get rid of. I must also remember to take my leave on Tuesday too. Must be the headache. I still have that ridiculous red spot like a love bite on my neck. Ugly.

It isn’t itchy so my best guess is that it’s acne growing on the most obvious place. I hate acne. It’s difficult to get rid off and painful too. The scars are horrible too. I noticed that I have more wrinkles around my eye area too. I’m getting old!

The Future is Scary06.06.08

What the future holds I’m not sure. I just want to be sure about something and yet afraid to do it. It’s my first step towards something. I have tried to work towards another goal, getting a writing job but unfortunately, been rejected twice. It isn’t as much as some who may have been rejected 10 times.

I find that in Singapore, if you want to work towards your dreams, it isn’t that easy. Various factors include:

  • Your own flat.
  • You lack the reputation such as being featured in magazines for photography, writing, etc.
  • Your own car.
  • You have been doing what you hope will help you but unfortunately, your face needs to be plastered all over the net and your name must be found all over the net before anyone will want to feature you.

I will be facing the unknown and I think I may have to plaster my name all over the net and write my name all over the net so that the idea that I have in mind will take off. I don’t know how long it’ll take but I hope that it’ll pay off well.

Life here has been good. I can walk home after 7pm without much worries except for that time when I saw that flasher. That memory wasn’t good because that wanker hasn’t been caught and I don’t know why the police never did call me for a photo fit. Oh wait, Mas Salamat was/is more important than some penis attention. Sorry.

While I have some complains about the public transport, I will not say that I don’t love my country. I just love my country only. However, life has become stressful in some ways because if you are not promoted at work, you are screwed when you reached your 30s for a woman and 40s for a man. It isn’t written but it’s all in the mindset.

The future is scary because I know what I don’t want. However, I don’t know what I want. My elimination list is rather long at this moment and I hope that by the time I have eliminated 70%, I know what I want.

World Attacked by Disease Plagues for Years05.30.08

Each year, we hope that it will be a good year. Sometimes, our hopes are dashed. The disasters that have made known contains high mortality rates. Plagues are scary because they spread fast and kill fast too. Until the medicine or antibodies are developed, more people die each day.

Bubonic Plague aka Black Death

It was horrible. It began in the 1330s.

In the early 1330s an outbreak of deadly bubonic plague occurred in China. The bubonic plague mainly affects rodents, but fleas can transmit the disease to people. Once people are infected, they infect others very rapidly. Plague causes fever and a painful swelling of the lymph glands called buboes, which is how it gets its name. The disease also causes spots on the skin that are red at first and then turn black.

The disease soon spread to Europe and western Asia due to China’s business dealings with the rest of the world. It finally ended its destruction in 1771.

Small Pox

Smallpox (also known by the Latin names Variola or Variola vera) is a contagious disease unique to humans. Smallpox is caused by either of two virus variants named Variola major and Variola minor. The deadlier form, V. major, has a mortality rate of 30–35%, while V. minor causes a milder form of disease called alastrim and kills ~1% of its victims. Long-term side-effects for survivors include the characteristic skin scars. Occasional side effects include blindness due to corneal ulcerations and infertility in male survivors.

Spanish Flu

The 1918 flu pandemic (commonly referred to as the Spanish flu) was an influenza pandemic that was first found in the United States, appeared in Sierra Leone and France, and then spread to nearly every part of the world. It was caused by an unusually severe and deadly Influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1.

Malaria

Malaria is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, which is transmitted via the bites of infected mosquitoes. In the human body, the parasites multiply in the liver, and then infect red blood cells.

Recorded fevers started in 2700BC, China. Scientific Studies began in 1880.

Bird Flu

Avian influenza is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These influenza viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. However, avian influenza is very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very sick and kill them.

This started the culling session that made animal lovers steam. Cats were targeted to be the ones carrying the deadly disease. This is an ongoing disease. The origins are seemed to have started from China.

Mad Cow Disease

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as Mad-Cow Disease (MCD), is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease in cattle, that causes a spongy degeneration in the brain and spinal cord and red eyes. BSE has a long incubation period, about 4 years, usually affecting adult cattle at a peak age onset of four to five years, all breeds being equally susceptible. In the United Kingdom, the country worst affected, more than 179,000 cattle have been infected and 4.4 million slaughtered during the eradication programme.

Beef imports were affected. So did the blood donations as anyone who has ever visited Europe will not be required to donate blood. This law is applicable to Singapore. The disease was suspected to have come about because reared bovines were fed the remains of slaughtered sick chickens, cattle and sheep in their daily feeds. The change in their diets made them unable to adapt. Cattle are natural herbivores.

It is scary to see that the world is being plagued by diseases just after you thought one was eradicated, another problem arises. A killer disease will be found in 2011 when cancer treatment succeeds. If Mr Juseleeno is accurate in his predictions. A death that will occur in just 4 hours. Swift and devastating indeed.

Is the world coming to an end?

Not Pampering Myself Today05.21.08

I would usually pamper myself on this day. This year, I didn’t really pamper myself because I have given myself the early gift of perfect eyesight by Lasik. Expensive, that was. A few friends SMS me wishing me Happy Birthday. CD, in India for work, MMS me with a birthday song. Even my mum SMS me too. I wiped a tear from the corner of my eye.

DD called me last night to be the 1st one to wish me. 2 poly friends wished me via SMS yesterday. On the day of the makeover at DeCharacter, ES, NL and HF treated me for dinner after the makeover. So sweet. I don’t have to pay for the makeover as it’s gift, right? :P
During the makeover, we had fun with the poses. I was often told to open my eyes bigger as mine are the smallest pair among the 5. I want bigger eyes. I wonder if I go Korea, I will get bigger pair of eyes. Upon the output of the photos, I was really disappointed. My eyes were simply too small next to the group of girls. I shall never. Ever. Have any group photos with them again. In addition, anyone with huge eyes shall not take any photos next to me.

I blame my dad for giving me tiny eyes. I blame my mum for giving me high eyebrows. My eyes already so tiny and yet she gave me high eyebrows positions! Ok, so it’s the genetics issue. Can doctors change the genetics such that next time, my children won’t inherit tiny eyes? Wait, if they don’t then they won’t be my children, what am I talking about?

It’s a pity that I don’t have any leaves to take as my contract is ending soon. Thus, won’t be able to take some time off work for today. Besides, I prefer long weekends.

And I need a new job.

Donations Be Damned05.17.08

Donations. Something that is being done most of the time during crisis. The Myanmar’s encounter with Cyclone Nargis brought about an influx of requests for donations. Such is the time to request for money. What I can’t understand is why don’t they ever accept blankets, tents, clothes, food and other non-monetary stuff at such urgent times.

Medical stuff donations [via Flickr]

Isn’t that what the citizens need most at this time? They need food and water to be delivered as the water supply is not portable at this stage. Will money always solve it? Or it’s easier to transfer money as opposed to the manpower to manage the stuff that has been donated?

I have clothes that I don’t wear any more. Will they want or they prefer their clothes? Without blankets, won’t the people feel cold at night? Without tents for temporary lodging, will they feel cold when the wind is blowing, will they feel hot when the sun is shining down on them?

Money is easy to transfer but where is the money going to? Can it be used at the moment for buying medical stuff? Can it build the road faster? Will the money really be used to help the people instead of going into the pockets of those who should be helping the people?

After the NKF fiasco, one does wonder if the donations are really being used for the reasons that were supposedly stated. When I saw the way they dumped boxes of water and food from a helicopter without any parachutes to prevent the boxes from being smashed into smiterins, I wonder if China is truly giving the necessity such that the people feel that they are truly looked after.

I’m no longer sure if I’m donating to the right causes despite what the signboard says. I’m not that heartless but if proven that the donations are not going for the causes that is being stated, why should I donate to those who have too much authority over the money and used them for other purposes?

Faked Cancer to Avoid Work05.15.08

One would think that one would like to be healthy. However, this woman, takes the cake. She is accused of faking brain cancer in order to avoid going to work. Her scheme came to light when the “doctor’s letter” was left on the printer of a neighbour.

Her colleagues were so kind to donate their medical leaves so that she could rest at home too. What if one day, the cancer part is real but no one will believe her any more?

Day 10: After Lasik Operation05.06.08

Rafting on the Arkansas River.Image via Wikipedia

It is now day 10 of my Lasik after operation. The vision is now crystal clear. I do have to avoid looking at close objects for too long, such as reading and sitting in front of the computer for too long. There is no point spending more than $2,000 only to go back to short-sightedness, isn’t it?

However, there are risks involved. No one said it was ever 100% guaranteed. Let’s be realistic here. It’s an operation. Any operation has risks involved. Even a liver transplant has risk involved. I have avoided crowded places on the first day.

I have avoided rubbing my eyes for 10 days. I have avoided letting tap water fall onto my eyes for 10 days, nearly. I have used the eye drops at every hour and drinking the eye drops as I simply have to use up the Refresh drops or it’ll be a ways. Not drink literally as the eye drops just flow to the back of my throat. When you cry, your nose will have some build up, right?

The Good

  • Clear vision upon waking up.
  • Snorkling or diving is great.
  • White water rafting great too, you don’t have to worry about your glasses being tossed away during the trip down river.
  • Take a break from being in front of the computer.

The Bad

  • You need to wash your hair at the hair salon for 2 weeks.
  • Your face is dirty half the time as no water can touch your eyes during the healing period.
  • Night vision problems for a few months. Halos and star bursts affect those who drive at night.
  • Itchy eyelids can’t be scratched for 2 weeks. You don’t want to displace or have wrinkles in the flap.
  • Dry eyes reported for some people.
  • No running, jogging, soccer, any contact sports for a month.

All these negatives will go away. Just bear with the cumbersome for 2 weeks and wait for the halos to go away. I’m hoping to be able to wash my face and hair properly soon. A few more days to go.
