Since the BFG was recently shown in the cinemas, I took a look at the book (well, synopsis via Wikipedia). I remember reading the book but have since forgotten the contents except for the important parts. I must say, Roald Dahl was more of a dark writer. In fact, he wrote dark themes for children. For BFG movie, it stayed closely to the book’s contents with some changes. The BFG book itself isn’t that dark themed though.
Now, for some reason, I am reminded of The Witches by Roald Dahl. Since I watched The Witches many years back, I went through the book again and the books itself is rather dark. The movie was faithful to most of the contents except the ending was changed in the movie to make it less dark. I am starting to wonder how come I didn’t find the books by Roald Dahl to be too dark themed for the teenagers. Perhaps, it was appropriate then?
The Witches by Roald Dahl now feels like he dislikes witches and their hatred for children. The witches were written to be ugly, bald and evil. None of them good. The children were not mentioned much except for 2 of them. I’m now not so sure if I should let my kids read books written by Roald Dahl. Perhaps, I should just expose them to different themes and let them learn.
