Why Singapore’s Service Is Lousy No Matter What
I haven’t had the fortune to visit other countries yet. However, gathering information from people who have the fortune to do so, I noticed something, service in Singapore really is lousy no matter what.
- There isn’t any incentive to knowing what food was ordered by whom since tips are not practised here.
- Adding service charge and GST does nothing to help the employee, hence the lack of heart put into the service.
- Commissions are earned only from sales, hence the hard-selling of all those sales persons instead of knowing what the customer wants.
- This kind of culture has been put into practice for more than 10 years and changing such a behaviour is a painful process.
- Giving the award for best service to the company is different from awarding the employee who did all the work.
- Lack of dignity for the service industry despite the fact that doctors, dentists and lawyers are also in the service industries.
What do you think?

Thats an interesting point of view. Maybe thats one of the reason why. Service staff doesnt earn alot anyways and because they dont even have tips, they probably wont want to make an effort since they earn pretty much the same.
Yep. It’s human nature to want to be rewarded for doing something they feel they have done good. Hence, I think it’s the incentives that make or break the service.
