A Mind of My Own

For years, I had this skin issue. Or maybe due to my obsessive compulsive behaviour that I’m unable to control myself at times. Whenever I see something out of place, I will either remove it or try to amend it. For my skin issue, I try to remove it. Bad idea. Very. Bad. Idea.

The skin from my thumbs, yes, 2 of ‘em, got small tears and over the years, got to huge tears and even bleeding when I try to remove that dried skin. Scary, huh? My parents often nagged at me to get something from the doctors to help myself. They were very worried that my significant other would mind the rough skin while holding hands.

Perhaps that’s why I got nagged whenever possible. My mum went through all lengths to get lotions, oils and herbs to help me. I, on the other hand, wasn’t worried because I was nonchalant. I felt that the more I worry about it, the worst it would be. I was wrong. I was getting stressed and my problem got even worse. I was ashamed of shaking hands with people fearing that they would notice my hands immediately.

Imagine shaking hands with someone and feeling strange where the affected fingers have touched you. You would be curious and look at the source of the strange feeling. You would be wondering why a hand can feel hard to the touch. My thumbs have replaced the skin but it was always hard skin. They lost their sensitivity with the new skin.

It wasn’t until last year, that I decided to take up something for myself. It was due to the biometric passport that got me moving towards better skin. I went to Loke Skin Clinic. The doctor is grandfatherly-like and I felt at ease despite my early nervousness before walking into the room.

He asked the basic questions like how long this had been and if I was allergic to any chemical products or food. After obtaining my answers, he gave me the option of using the cream or to have an injection that would most certainly help improve the condition more effectively. He also mentioned about the oral medication but it wasn’t advisable for someone who hadn’t give birth yet. It would affect my hormones and besides, I didn’t want that sort of option despite its effectiveness. I chose the cream as I was scared and it was during my exam time and I didn’t want them to be affected.

In addition, I was scared because I went there alone. After paying for the expensive cream, I started using it everyday. After a few months, I saw the results. My thumbs had soft skin replacing the old skin instead of thick, hard skin. Although my left thumb wasn’t getting that good.

As the cream was finishing and still no results from the new skin, I decided to go back again. This time I took the injection as my exam was over. Frankly speaking, I was still nervous about it and feared that I would not get anything out even with the injection.

Again, the consultation wasn’t cheap but hey, my skin problem is solved. I have thumb prints that are visible and clear instead of patches being seen.
